VIOLA2020 Call for Scores Winner!

VIOLA2020 Call for Scores

 

Maggie Snyder, Associate Professor of Viola at the University of Georgia, along with a committee of judges, is pleased to announce the winner of the VIOLA2020 Call for Scores for solo viola by American women, in celebration of the Centennial of the 19th Amendment. 

 

Winner:   

Kirsten Volness for her work for Hypatia for solo viola.  This work will receive the $2000 prize and its premiere by Maggie Snyder on March 4, 2020 at 5:30pm in the Ramsey Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA.  This event is free and open to the public and will be live-streamed at music.uga.edu/streaming. The work will also be included in the final recording project to be produced and recorded in early 2021, which will also include the winner of the VIOLA2019 Call for Scores winning piece lost angel by Virginia Samuel, a new commissioned work by Gabriela Lena Frank (April 2, 2020 Premiere), and a new commissioned work by Gity Razas (Fall 2020 Premiere), among a handful of other works by American women.

Runner-up: 

Aleyna Brown for her work Portrait of the American Woman for solo viola.  This work will receive it’s premiere by Maggie Snyder in the fall of 2020 and will be included in the final recording project mentioned above.

Honorable mentions: 

Emily Singleton’s In our Walk for solo viola will receive its premiere by Nathan Groot, DMA Candidate at the University of Georgia on Monday, March 23, 2020 in Ramsey Recital Hall in the Performing Arts Center at the University of Georgia as part of the VIOLA2020 celebration.

 

Polina Nazaykinskaya also receives an honorable mention from the judges for her piece 84 – Sonata Fantasia for solo viola.
